The Biden administration granted the nation’s first offshore wind farm a 15-year grace period on posting the full price of decommissioning the wind array to help the costly project get off the ground, according to internal emails.
BOEM’s internal documents were obtained by Protect the Public’s Trust, a conservative watchdog organization helmed by Michael Chamberlain, a former official for President Donald Trump.
Given how new the offshore wind industry is in the U.S., Chamberlain said the delay granted to Vineyard was “strange.”
“A first-of-its-kind development of this scale seems to be a strange one to grant such a significant exemption or delay to systems designed to protect the taxpayers,” he said. “Incredibly, BOEM has taken exactly the opposite approach to oil and gas leasing, which has proven its economic viability for nearly a century.”
